Meeting The Bogeyman – BBC TV Programme on Restorative Justice
In 2014, when she was 19, Steph was attacked in a bank by Ian who was dressed all in black. In order to force the clerks to give him money, Ian held Steph hostage, threatening to cut off her feet with a meat cleaver.
Steph’s life fell apart. She suffered paranoia, panic attacks and flashbacks fearing the appearance of the ‘Bogeyman’ everywhere.
After years of suffering, she finally contacted her victim support officer who transferred her to a Julie Woolvine, restorative justice practitioner from Remedi. Steph was gradually told more and more about her attacker. Finally she agreed to an RJ meeting with Ian which would change both of their lives.
On 24 May 2018 the BBC broadcast this film reconstructing the events leading up to and after a restorative justice session which was working in conjunction with the probation service.
Actors play them on screen, but the voices you hear belong to the real Ian and Steph.
The film is available here until March 2019.
